I’m usually a big fan of minimalistic, simple and clear designs, so the Breakthrough Pro theme by StudioPress should definitely appeal to me. After having a quick look at the demo I was certainly impressed.
Breakthrough Pro Design
I love the design of Breakthrough Pro. It is very simple without feeling too boring or generic. The white space and use of a couple of bold colours look fantastic. The typography is awesome and the demo site would be very easy to use by any visitor – allowing them to read the important stuff and see your products and services quickly.
The only bit I was a bit disappointed with was the portfolio page. I think I’d like a bit of extra flair on my portfolio page. A simple grid with no interaction just doesn’t seem strong enough for a modern-day portfolio page. Other than that though, I really liked the design of all the main pages.
Breakthrough Pro Setup
I found the setup of Breakthrough Pro very easy, but I’m an advanced user who is used to setting up all kinds of WordPress themes.
As with all the StudioPress themes I’ve tried, the theme is set up using widgets rather than a page builder or other methods of getting around the limitations of WordPress.
The advantage of using widgets is that the theme remains very lightweight, with no fancy bolt-ons or plugins needed. The disadvantage is that it doesn’t feel very intuitive adding lots of text widgets and needing to add various bits of HTML to make your website look like the demo site. The documentation for the theme does do a great job of explaining everything though.
It only took me about 10 minutes to create this variation of the demo site on my test website:
Breakthrough Pro Features
There arent many features to speak of really! This theme uses mainly default WordPress functionality along with a few extra features from the Genesis framework to make a simple, effective portfolio or agency website. If you like the design and you don’t need lots of extra features, this theme could be perfect for you.
