The homepage is clean and simple with featured posts fixed to the left hand side a a list of recent posts to the right. It is the articles / story pages where the focus is. On these pages you will see a huge featured image with the title, tagline and date overlayed on top. There are no other distractions at the top of these pages. The menu is barely noticeable and the page is designed to get the user reading and fully engaged in the story.
Within the article / story pages there are all kinds of options to make the story come alive. You can add ‘lead’ text, galleries, large featured images spanning the full width of the page that help break up the text, quote blocks and more.
Underneath each post is an author box, a simple comments section and a next / previous post navigation section. The article pages as a whole are excellent and perfect for anyone with long, detailed stories to share with the world. The stories really come alive when filled with beautiful images and video content.
The rest of the theme is very plain. Basically just white pages with literally no other elements other than the content area. I think the user experience suffers on these pages though. With the menu being so easy to miss it could be frustrating for some visitors.
The Admin Area
Journalistic is designed by UpThemes and they have done a great job with the admin area. It is very simple and straight forward with a nice choice of color schemes built in to the customizer. You’ll also get Typekit support and integration with Beaver Builder – a popular drag and drop layout builder plugin.
This is one of the best long form storytelling themes on the market and it’s created by a very experienced team. Journalistic is a great purchase for anyone looking for a storytelling theme.
