The design of Swell is minimal and simple but it doesn’t feel too sparse like many minimal WordPress themes do. This is partly due to the great use of videos which look really good in the surfing inspired demo.
Swell would work great just as it is but it would laso be easy to change and turn into something really unique thanks to the theme options that allow you to easy change colors and typography (with Google Fonts). Swell is all about making your videos, portfolio items and blog posts stand out though. There are not really any other design elements that distract from that, so as long as you have some great content to show off, your website should end up looking great using the Swell theme.
My only slight criticism of the minimal design is on single post pages. I feel like these pages are just too generic and not very engaging. I’d probably want to change these if I decided to use the Swell theme. If all you want is a clean slate with no social sharing options, related posts etc then you may find the single post design just fine.
